UK offers funded PhD scholarships for Newton Mosharafa

CAIRO – 4 July 2018: The British Embassy announced new funding opportunities for Egyptian researchers under the Newton-Mosharafa PHD Fund, according to a statement by the British Embassy on Wednesday.

The British Embassy in Cairo will organize a special event on Thursday in celebration of the successful four-year research collaboration between Egypt and the UK through this program.

Along with the British Ambassador to Egypt, John Casson, the event will see the attendance of scholars from both countries and graduates of the Newton-Mosharafa program and a group of the embassy’s officials.

The Newton-Mosharafa was first founded in 2014, opening a new frontier for Egyptian researchers by strengthening their research capacities and providing them with an opportunity to collaborate with the British counterparts so that they could able to come up with viable solutions and strategies to address the current challenges faced by the country.

“Since its establishment, the Newton-Mosharafa Program funded more than 128 PhD scholarships and more than 40 scientific researches, and the number of female participants in the program has exceeded 50%,” the statement added.

The program is financed by the Department of Business Administration, Engineering and Industrial Strategy in the UK, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which represents the Egyptian side.

The British Council handles the recruitment process for the scholarship by screening the applications of the students and then nominating the eligible ones for the program.
