Port Said’s governor apologizes for Smuggling Kids video

CAIRO – 4 August 2018: Adel al-Ghadhban, governor of Port Said, apologized for the video that was circulated on social media featuring some teenagers who were caught smuggling clothes being interviewed in extremely disturbing way, adding that the governorate informed the social solidarity and child protection committee after the arrest to follow the case.

In a phone call to DMC on Friday, he pointed out that Port Said lacks professional media interviewers who can handle such situations, offering an apology to the children who appeared in the video.

He noted that the police arrest smugglers with the aim to protect Egyptian society and prevent manipulation of children in smuggling operations.

The video labeled “smuggling kids” went viral on Wednesday and stirred up anger of social media users because the interviewer used infuriating interviewing style, in which she tried to guilt the helpless children by asking them why they worked as smugglers instead of “Halal” (acceptable according to religious law) jobs.
